Research Areas
The key initial scientific aim of this Center is to perform prospective studies of the epidemiology and transmission of malaria at field sites in the endemic area. The studies will aim to characterize and understand:
- the heterogeneity of malaria infection, disease and transmission;
- the effects of control strategies on malaria transmission and pathogenesis; and
- the major obstacles to improving malaria control and potentially eliminating malaria, including drug and insecticide resistance.
Regional Impact
Malaria takes an enormous toll across the globe, particularly among children less than five years of age in Africa. The ICEMR will evaluate successes and failures in regional efforts to control and eliminate malaria.
