Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID)
Research Areas
DMID supports extramural research to control and prevent diseases caused by virtually all human infectious agents except HIV by providing
funding opportunities and a comprehensive set of
resources for researchers that support basic research, preclinical development, and clinical evaluation. Through funding opportunities, investigators may apply for grants or contracts. Through resources for researchers, investigators may obtain research tools and technologies to facilitate their research and request development by DMID-funded contractors of critical information needed to move a product through the product development pathway. Key areas include, but are not limited to:
- Investigation of the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases caused by nearly 300 bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral pathogens
- Efforts related to Biodefense
- Research on Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases
- Facilitation of Product Development
- Provision of Genomics and Advanced Technologies (e.g., genomic sequencing, pathogen functional genomics, structural genomics, proteomics, systems biology, and bioinformatics)
- Global Health Research
See Health & Research A–Z for an extensive list that includes specific research areas addressed by DMID.
