Targeting Resistance in Select Gram-Negative Pathogens

In FY 2011, NIAID funded the Targeting Resistance in Select Gram-Negative Pathogens initiative to stimulate the discovery and development of approaches that circumvent resistance in gram-negative pathogens. A major goal is to develop therapies that enhance or increase the activity of existing antimicrobial drugs by various means, such as administration in combination with existing drugs. In addition, the initiative will support research on drugs that target gram negative bacteria for which few to no treatments exist, as well as novel members of existing classes of antibacterial drugs that are substantially less likely to produce resistance.
