Capsid Structural Protein (CA, p24)

ribbon diagram

A diagram illustrating potential structural changes in the amino-terminal domain of the capsid that may occur upon proteolytic processing. The amino-terminal residues are disordered in the precursor polyprotein and form a ß hairpin stabilized by a salt bridge between 1Pro and 51Asp upon cleavage. The ß hairpin has been proposed to play a role in cone formation (1). Provided courtesy of Dr. Michael Summers, Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
