Are there citizenship or residency requirements for any of these awards?

Yes. Except for the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00), you must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or have permanent residency status (an Alien Registration Receipt Card, Form I-551) at time of award or appointment. People on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

For more information on the K99/R00, read our Pathway to Independence Awards (K99/R00) SOP.

Is a trainee a grantee?

No. Training grants are awarded to eligible institutions that pay stipends and benefits to candidates selected for pre- and postdoctoral research training by the training grant program director and a selection committee.
