Conducting Research -- Recovery Act Questions and Answers

<< Recovery Act Q&A Index · NIAID and the Economic Recovery Act

This page is meant as an interactive resource, often based on actual questions from the research community and NIAID staff. We link to more in-depth information in other sections of the NIAID and the Economic Recovery Act and Research Funding site.

Note that these answers may be true only for NIAID; other NIH institutes may take a different approach.

After I am awarded an ARRA grant what are the expectations?

Do I conduct my research differently using Recovery Act funds?

You can't take months to ramp up for the research. Because the driving purpose is to stimulate the economy, you must spend the money quickly, as well as appropriately. Read more at Change Your Mindset for Spending on What You Need to Do if You Get Stimulus Funds.

You also have special restrictions and requirements -- see What's different about a grant awarded using Recovery Act funds?

Can I carry over money from my ARRA award to my next regular grant?

No. When your ARRA grant ends, you will not be able to carry over money to your next regular grant. We are not expecting large unobligated balances; however, if you have a balance at that time, you can initiate a no-cost extension.

Can I take a no-cost extension on an ARRA award?

Yes. That includes ARRA R56-Bridge awards. See our No-Cost Extension SOP.

Keep in mind, a no-cost extension would delay your next non-ARRA award. For more information, go to How to Conduct a Two-Year Research Project.

Can I request one or two years of funding if I am in the first year of a no-cost extension for my R01?

If you are in your first no-cost extension, you can request funding only for the time remaining in it.

Can I request an administrative supplement if I am toward the end of my grant?

See Can I request an administrative supplement if I am toward the end of my grant? on our Supplements -- Recovery Act Questions and Answers.

What if my question wasn't answered here, or I'd like to suggest a question?
