Funding Opportunities
Where can I find a general description of opportunities funded through the Recovery Act?
See the Opportunities for NIAID Applicants section. For a complete list of all Recovery Act opportunities and whether NIAID participates, go to NIAID Participation in NIH ARRA Opportunities .
Where can I find information about supplements?
See our Supplements -- Recovery Act Questions and Answers page.
How can I apply for a Challenge Grant?
You can't -- the submission deadline has passed. Applications were due April 27, 2009.
Can I use my Challenge Grant topic for another funding opportunity?
Yes. Consider an R21 application, which allows up to $275,000 in direct costs over a two-year period. See NIAID's Small and Exploratory/Developmental Research Grants SOP.
There may be other opportunities. Check NIH Funding Opportunities Relevant to NIAID to see if you find a good fit.
If your Challenge Grant application didn't succeed, you can use the same application to apply for an investigator-initiated opportunity.
Can I accept a Challenge Grant if I already hold a career award?
Yes, if the career award allows concurrent support and you can reduce your time and effort to no less than six person months. Otherwise, you have to choose between the Challenge Grant and the career award.
How did NIH review Challenge Grants?
NIH used a two-phase, editorial board-style process. For the first review phase, 30 different special emphasis panels reviewed applications by mail.
For the second phase, the panels met in person to review the results of the first stage, focusing on overall significance and impact. At the meetings, each panel determined the cutoff point for unscored applications based on comments from the preliminary mail reviews.
What happens if my application is assigned to NIAID for an opportunity that NIAID isn't participating in?
If you list NIAID as the primary Institute for an opportunity we are not participating in, your application may not be reviewed. See the list of NIAID Participation in NIH ARRA Opportunities .
Based on referral guidelines, CSR will assign it to another institute, which may not accept the assignment.
