This page is meant as an interactive resource, often based on actual questions from the research community and NIAID staff. We link to more in-depth information in other sections of the NIAID and the Economic Recovery Act and Research Funding site.

Note that these answers may be true only for NIAID; other NIH institutes may take a different approach.

Getting Recovery Act Funding

How do I apply for my ARRA award after I receive your request?

Find instructions in Before You Can Get Stimulus Money.

Why do I need to send a detailed budget for my ARRA grant?

Stimulus funds come with more reporting requirements, so we need more detailed information; see What's different about a grant awarded using Recovery Act funds? and Special Reporting Requirements.

Do I need to submit revised Specific Aims and a revised budget if I get a one-year R56-Bridge award?

For Specific Aims, Bridges follow the same rules as ARRA R01s: no need to revise if you can get meaningful results for all your aims during the funding period. Read Before You Can Get Stimulus Money for details on submitting Specific Aims and budget information.

How do you determine the funding level for an ARRA award?

We are following our usual practice. For a new application, we fund direct costs for the first year at the study section-recommended level, and direct costs for the second year at the same amount.

For competing renewals, we fund direct costs for the first year at 20 percent more than direct costs (less equipment) of the last year of the noncompeting grant. If you are requesting less than a 20 percent increase in direct costs, we fund at the study section-recommended level.

What if I got two years of stimulus money and later years with regular appropriated funds?

Read Possibly Two Types of Funding.

If I'm applying for an opportunity, can I reuse an existing application?

Yes. You may respond to any request for applications (RFA) using the exact same application as an investigator-initiated application that was not funded. Conversely, you may submit an investigator-initiated application not funded under an RFA as a new application using the same application.

Since in both cases the application is considered to be new, submit it as new. For example, do not include an introduction describing changes made to your previous submission, and use receipt dates for new applications -- see the Standard Due Dates for Competing Applications.

Can career awardees get ARRA supplements?

What do you mean by significant unexpended balances for administrative supplements? Is a balance greater than 25 percent of the current year's total approved budget significant?

Are there restrictions on the amount a PI can request for equipment?

Yes. In general, you have a $100,000 total equipment limit when using ARRA funds. However, your request may exceed $100,000 if you are the only PI who will use it and you fully justify your request. The equipment can be several items that add up to $100,000.

For larger requests, look to the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). See the Equipment section of the Opportunities for NIAID Applicants page.

My application was assigned to NIAMS as primary institute and NIAID as secondary institute. Whom should I contact to have my application be considered for stimulus funding?

First talk to your program officer at NIAMS about the chances of funding there. Then talk to a program officer at NIAID. For NIAID program contacts, see Contact Staff for Help.

For an R01, can an administrative supplement support a PI’s salary or can it cover only salary for newly hired employees?
