Standard Operating Procedure Table of Contents

Purpose

To enable NIAID to fund different award types for extramural activities, such as R01 for a standard research project grant.

Procedure

NIH publishes Types of Grant Programs to define types of grants, cooperative agreements, and other awards ICs use to support extramural research. Not all ICs support all activity codes, and the ICs may use them differently. NIAID staff can use the NIAID-specific Lock icon: This link will not work for public visitors.Grant Types list.

When preparing initiatives, NIAID staff must determine award type. Extramural research activities fall into three main categories: grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.

  • Grants provide assistance to grantees who are responsible for the performance of the project.
  • Cooperative agreements are grants that require substantial scientific involvement of NIAID staff.
  • Contracts establish a procurement relationship between NIAID and a recipient.

Activity codes are three digit identifiers of specific award types, which may group together in different budget presentations to form funding mechanisms, such as R01 and P01 grants.

Program Officers

  • Since NIAID supports different types of grants and contracts, it may be difficult to select the appropriate activity code or funding mechanism when writing an initiative. For clarification or guidance, consult with the DEA staff listed below.

Division of Extramural Activities Staff

  • Review each initiative concept to determine the appropriateness of funding mechanism and activity code.
  • Certify to the NIH Office of Extramural Research that mechanisms and activity codes are appropriate.
