Standard Operating Procedure Table of Contents

Purpose

To provide grant funding to at least two related research projects.

Procedure

You may apply for a multiproject grant in one the following two ways:

  • Respond to a P50 or U19 request for applications (RFA).
  • Submit an application for an investigator-initiated P01 program project grant.

P01 grants support multidisciplinary, long-term research programs headed by an investigator who brings in a group of other investigators to support the project and share resources. This is the only option that allows investigator-initiated applications.

P50 grants are research center grants where a multidisciplinary group of investigators share a common research topic. They are solicited through RFAs.

U19 grants are cooperative agreements, requiring substantial involvement from agency staff. See the Cooperative Agreements (U) SOP.

To help you decide which way to go, read Application Approach: What Are Your Choices? and Compare FOAs in our NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal.

As with all "big grants," investigators must get an NIAID program officer's approval before submitting an investigator-initiated application with direct costs of $500,000 or more in any year of the grant. This policy applies even if none of the individual projects requests $500,000 or more. See our Big Grants SOP for more information.

Investigators must also obtain program officer approval to resubmit an application.

Applicants

  • For an investigator-initiated application, contact an NIAID program officer when still in the planning stage in case NIAID rejects your idea. NIAID must pre-approve your application before you apply, indicating that we agreed to allow Center for Scientific Review to assign it here for possible funding.
  • Include with your application cover letter a letter from an NIAID program officer giving approval of your application for review and funding consideration by the Institute. You must include this documentation with your application.
  • If responding to an RFA or PA, read it thoroughly for eligibility conditions.
  • Read Instructions for Preparing a Multiproject Research Application for instructions.

Program Staff

  • Document your approval by following the procedures in the Big Grants SOP.
