Vaccine Expert Barton Haynes to Present Hill Lecture on April 14
Barton F. Haynes, M.D., will present the 9th James C. Hill Memorial Lecture on Thursday, April 14, from 2 pm to 3 pm in the Lipsett Amphitheater at the National Institutes of Health. His talk is titled "The Path to HIV Vaccine Development."
Dr. Haynes will begin by discussing challenges and impediments associated with HIV vaccine design and testing, and progress being made to overcome them. Then he will present new data on the immune responses generated by the candidate vaccine tested in the RV144 clinical trial in Thailand, the first HIV vaccine to demonstrate modest efficacy in humans. Finally, he will talk about how these results will inform and guide future research efforts.
Dr. Haynes is the Frederic M. Hanes Professor of Medicine and Immunology at the Duke University School of Medicine and the director of both the Duke Human Vaccine Institute and the NIAID-funded Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI), a consortium of six institutes that develop and test new vaccine strategies to overcome key immunological roadblocks in HIV vaccine design.
