6th Five Year Report
Dedication
Ivan
L. Bennett, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Bennett began his distinguished
work with the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical Science
Program as a member of the U.S. Delegation in 1967.
He succeeded Dr. Colin M. MacLeod, the first United
States Chair, and served continuously as Chair of the
U.S. Delegation from 1972 until his death in 1990. During
these 18 years, Dr. Bennett unfail-ingly showed inspired
leadership throughout his Chairmanship. He wisely and
earnestly engaged in strengthening and enriching the
Panels' scientific program and work of the Delegation.
A remarkable achievement was his creation of new Panels.
The Joint Environmental Carcinogenesis and Mutagenesis
Panels were established in 1972, when environmental
pollution caused by chemical substances was gaining
prominence as a major health hazard. Dr. Bennett encouraged
the formation of the Joint Hepatitis Panels in 1979,
based on his evaluation of this global disorder. In
1981, with full realization that immunology was in the
mainstream of new developments involving most Panel
programs, he provided the initiative to form the Joint
Immunology Boards. In 1988, when the rapid development
of AIDS attracted world-wide attention, Dr. Bennett
strongly advocated the establishment of the Joint AIDS
Panels. These new Panels were created under the leadership
of Dr. Bennett, who weighed the need for collabo-rative
research under the U.S.-Japan Program. An active joint
research program in each area is in place.
In the beginning of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative
Medical Science Program, there were constraints in Japan
regarding availability of specialized scientific materials
and highly technical equipment necessary for investigative
work to go for-ward. In his effective way, Dr. Bennett
assisted greatly in making such essential items available,
another example of his dedication to the job at hand.
The Joint Subcommittee held a celebration
for the Program's 25th Anniversary at its commemorative
meeting, the Silver Jubilee, on July 18, 1990, in Tokyo.
His Japanese colleagues took advantage of the opportunity
to award Dr. Bennett a decoration bestowed by His Majesty
the Emperor of Japan, the Order of the Sacred Treasure,
Gold and Silver Star, in recognition of his dedicated
contributions to the Program and for his advancement
of medical research in Japan. On the occasion of the
30th Anniversary of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical
Science Program, we proudly dedicate this Sixth 5-Year
Report to Dr. Ivan Bennett.
