September 2012 DMID Council-Approved Concepts

Concepts represent early planning stages for program announcements, requests for applications, or solicitations for Council's input. If NIAID publishes an initiative from one of these concepts, we link to it below. To find initiatives, go to the Opportunities and Announcements portal.

NB: Council approval does not guarantee that a concept will become an initiative.

Objective: To stimulate multidisciplinary, collaborative, and synergistic approaches to sexually transmitted infections (STI) research; develop and evaluate control and prevention strategies to reduce the public health impact of these infections; and to leverage platforms and share expertise and knowledge to maintain a vigorous and productive research agenda and identify gaps in the field.

Description: The goal of this RFA is to fund multidisciplinary and multiproject programs of highly qualified research centers that incorporate and foster collaborative research among investigators from several scientific disciplines, including biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and product development. Given the range of control and prevention strategies that might be proposed, the areas within these disciplines could include microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, adolescent medicine, gynecology, and behavioral science. Examples of potential areas of research and product interest are interventional and behavioral studies, evaluation of diagnostics, therapeutic agents, vaccines, and microbicides.

In this recompetition, NIAID plans to focus on syndromes and/or clinical outcomes that may encompass several pathogens. In addition, each Center will be required to support a career development and training program to help mentor investigators who are new to the field.
