February 2010 DMID Council-Approved Concepts
Concepts represent early planning stages for program announcements, request for applications, or solicitations for Council's input. If NIAID publishes an initiative from one of these concepts, we link to it below. To find initiatives, go to the Opportunities and Announcements portal.
NB: Council approval does not guarantee that a concept will become an initiative.

Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinical Trials Group
Request for Proposals
Contact: Gehmelle Johnson
Objective: To provide support for the conduct of clinical trials to evaluate diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and microbicides for the control and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Description: Under this initiative, clinical trials of candidate diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and microbicides will be conducted in the relevant domestic and international populations at risk for STIs. Contractors will provide the capacity to access clinics that provide services in the specialized health science discipline of STIs and the special populations needed to conduct these studies. These special populations include adolescents, young adults, and men who have sex with men (MSMs). The sites will be primarily domestic, with international sites focused on areas with low HIV incidence. This will provide the ability to evaluate products coming out of the NIAID product development pipeline in the area of diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and microbicides.
