Strategy for Funding Decisions
On this strategy page, you'll see how the status of our budget and paylines may have a major influence on when you get your grant and what you should do if an award is not imminent.
You'll want to know the steps to take after review so you can avoid a delay in funding or plan your next actions if funding is not on the horizon.

The status of our budget and paylines may affect you.
Until we receive our fiscal year budget, NIAID defines low interim paylines that may go up once we have our budget.
After we set our actual (not interim) R01 payline, it does not change; other paylines may change during the fiscal year.
Toward the end of the fiscal year, we stop using paylines and usually fund more applications that were deferred for a funding decision or nominated for selective pay.

Know what steps to take after review and before funding.
Check our paylines; then contact your program officer after you receive your summary statement to do the following:
- Ask about the probability of imminent funding.
- If your application is on hold for funding or unlikely to be funded, get advice on what to do. See Revise, Don't Wait for Later Funding if funding is deferred.
- Ask your program officer if he or she (or a representative) attended the review meeting and can give you additional insight into the discussion.
- If funding is not imminent, go to Part 6. If Not Funded.
- Discuss what you need to do in advance of our just-in-time request—if you get this request and your application scored within the payline, submit promptly.
Contact your program officer quickly if your summary statement has a human subjects or animal research code indicating study section concerns that create a bar to award.
- If your summary statement has a code that creates a bar to award, we can't give you an award until you resolve the issue.

Know how we fund grants.
We fund investigator-initiated applications mostly by paylines.
- At NIAID, we fund all applications that rank within a payline unless they have a bar to award or other administrative problem. (Note: other institutes have other policies.)
- NIAID has two options for funding beyond the payline that you must be nominated for: selective pay and R56-Bridge awards.
For requests for applications and some program announcements, we fund mostly by overall impact score until we use up the funds for the program.
