Research Misconduct, Fraud, Waste and Abuse

Purpose

To ensure grantees and contractors use NIAID funds and conduct research appropriately.

Procedure

Inappropriate activities fall into four general categories: research misconduct, improper conduct, criminal offenses, and misuse of NIH grant and contract funds. For instructions on reporting improper actions on an NIH grant or contract, read the following SOPs:

• Allegations of Research Misconduct SOP—for allegations of research misconduct.
• Reporting Fraud, Waste, and Abuse SOP—for allegations of improper conduct, criminal offenses, or misuse of NIH grant and contract funds. See definitions to your right.

If notified of inappropriate activities on a grant or contract, NIAID staff forward allegations to the appropriate officials and do not provide advice or guidance.
