Standard Operating Procedure Table of Contents
Purpose
To request that the Center for Scientific Review (CSR) conduct initial peer review of applications typically reviewed by NIAID or to request that NIAID review applications usually reviewed by CSR.
Procedure
While CSR reviews most NIH single-project research applications and individual fellowships, NIAID sometimes asks CSR to review applications normally reviewed by the Institute, e.g., applications responding to a request for applications (RFA). Sometimes CSR asks NIAID to review applications that CSR typically handles.
Program Officers
To request that CSR review some of NIAID's applications, send the information below to Contact for NIAID Staff as soon as an initiative is approved. Contact for NIAID Staff will forward the request to CSR.
- Scope of request—single event or ongoing.
- Cooperating ICs; if any.
- Activity codes.
- Format of review expected—regular study section or special emphasis panel.
- Any special submission or referral considerations.
- Estimated number of responses.
- Proposed submission date and letter of intent date if applicable.
- Council date.
- Assistance that could be provided for this activity or another review.
CSR discourages receipt dates in April, August, or December due to standing expedited review submission dates for SBIR, STTR, fellowships, and AIDS applications.
CSR will send NIAID its decision one to two weeks after the deadline for receiving requests (see chart below).

If CSR asks NIAID to review applications, CSR Contact sends the information listed above to Contact for NIAID Staff. Contact for NIAID Staff lets CSR know whether NIAID can accommodate their request.
