How and Where NIAID Research Happens
NIAID directs and carries out scientific research in two ways: NIAID scientists conduct research in lab and clinical facilities at the main NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, and at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana. NIAID also directs research projects through contracts and grants to scientists at medical centers and research institutions throughout the world. Many contracts and grants are carried out through networks of facilities that enable rapid response to emerging infectious disease outbreaks, such as H1N1.
