Strategic Plan

NIAID's biodefense research priorities include basic research; genomics research, the expansion of research infrastructure, and the development of new diagnostics, therapies, and vaccines to protect civilians against potential agents of bioterrorism.

The NIAID Strategic Plan for Biodefense Research – 2007 Update (PDF) continues to focus on basic research and its application to product development, but also represents a shift toward a more flexible, broad spectrum approach.

NIAID’s plan reflects the Institute’s partnerships with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise (PHEMCE) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
