Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. NIAID-supported scientists conducting basic cholera research are studying the genetics of V. cholerae, its evolution, and how it interacts with environmental factors. Vaccine and treatment researchers are exploring live and "killed" vaccine formulations and novel molecular and folk-based remedies for cholera.
