Coronaviruses Research

When severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) emerged in 2003, NIAID-funded investigators and the global research community mobilized to learn more about this new illness and find ways to treat and prevent it. Though SARS disappeared by 2004, some coronavirus research projects remained active. As other viral threats, such as Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), continued to emerge over the following years, these established programs helped researchers to mount quick, efficient, and collaborative responses.
