Funding Overview

NIAID accepts diagnostics grant applications submitted through two general types of funding opportunities, Investigator-initiated funding opportunities and applications submitted in response to Request for Application (RFA) announcements.

There are a variety of Parent Announcements applicants may use to submit their Investigator-initiated research projects including R01, R03, R21 activity codes, as well as funding opportunities available to Small Businesses (see below). Each Parent Announcement has three receipt dates per year.

In addition to investigator-initiated funding opportunities, NIAID periodically releases Request for Application (RFA) announcements to stimulate targeted research by requesting grant applications in a well-defined scientific area such as diagnostics development. Unlike the Parent Announcements, RFAs have a single receipt date and identify funds set aside and the number of awards likely to be made: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AI-13-013.html.

Current Diagnostics Funding Opportunities Available to Small Businesses

NIAID also supports diagnostics research conducted by Small Businesses through grants awarded via the following Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Funding Opportunities:

• PA-13-088, Omnibus Solicitation for Small Business Innovation Research Grant Applications (Parent SBIR)
• PA-10-123 NIAID Advanced Technology SBIR (NIAID-at-SBIR [R43/R44]) This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications from small business concerns (SBCs) for advanced technology projects, including diagnostics, that require a longer award period and greater award amount than those routinely allowed under the SBIR program.
• PA-12-090, New Technologies for Viral Hepatitis SBIR
• PA-10-122 SHIFT Award: Small Businesses Helping Investigators to Fuel the Translation of Scientific Discoveries [SBIR: R43/R44] The primary objectives of the SHIFT SBIR initiative are: (1) to foster research that is translational in nature and (2) to transform academic scientific discoveries into commercial products and services. Academic researchers can be a driving force for new products and services in an SBC. A major feature of the SHIFT program includes the requirement for an investigator who is primarily employed by a U.S. research institution at the time of application to transition to an SBC and be primarily employed (more than 50 percent time) by the SBC by or at the time of award. A SHIFT SBIR grant enables an SBC to increase both its scientific research staff and its core competencies.

• PA-10-124 NIAID Advanced Technology STTR (NIAID-at-STTR [R41/R42]) This FOA encourages STTR grant applications from SBCs for advanced technology projects, including diagnostics, that require a longer award period and greater award amount than those routinely allowed under the SBIR program.
