Laboratory of Allergic Diseases

The Laboratory of Allergic Diseases (LAD) conducts basic, translational, and clinical research on allergic diseases including food allergy. Researchers in the LAD seek to better understand the immune system components that are involved by identifying events at the clinical and molecular level that trigger and modulate allergic reactions. The expectation is that such an approach will lead to improved disease management.

Within the LAD, the Food Allergy Research Unit seeks to understand the key genetic, immunologic, and biochemical pathways that lead to the development of food allergy and how they can be manipulated for therapeutic benefit. Their current research efforts are focused on the following areas:

  • Genetic Diseases Associated With Food Allergy

    Studying rare genetic disorders associated with food allergy and other allergic conditions provides insight into the key cellular and signaling pathways that lead to allergic inflammation. This information will help in the development of new therapies for people with allergic diseases.

  • Environmental and Immunologic Factors That Influence Food Allergy

    Multiple factors contribute to food allergy. Both genetics and the environment likely play a role and the food allergy research group is studying how these two variables interact. Emphasis is placed on the identification of immunologic markers that predict the severity and persistence of food allergy.
