Prevention

Because herpes can be transmitted from someone who has no symptoms, even using the precautions listed below is not enough to prevent transmission.

  • Do not have oral-genital contact if you or your sexual partner has any symptoms or findings of oral herpes.
  • Using barriers such as latex condoms during sexual activity may decrease transmission when you use them consistently and correctly. However, transmission can still occur because condoms may not cover all infected areas.

Valtrex can be used to help prevent transmission of genital herpes, but it has to be taken continuously by the infected person. While it significantly decreases the risk of tranmitting herpes, transmission can still occur.
