Funding Opportunities for HIV/AIDS Researchers

NIAID funds HIV/AIDS research through a variety of mechanisms. The following is a description of the various grant programs available to investigators interested in pursuing specific types of HIV/AIDS studies.

Grant Program Description Area of HIV/AIDS Research
Basic Research on HIV Persistence Supports the development of new ideas and approaches to understand persistent HIV infection in patients on highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) and to develop strategies to control and eliminate the virus-carrying cells. Basic Research
Targeting Inflammation and Immune Activation in HIV Disease Supports small proof-of-concept clinical trials, with concurrent intensive laboratory studies, designed to evaluate the effect of an intervention on chronic immune activation or persistent inflammation in HIV-infected individuals who are taking effective antiretroviral therapy. Basic Research
Mechanistic Studies of HIV-exposed Seronegative Individuals Support mechanistic studies of individuals who are repeatedly exposed to HIV but remain seronegative (HESN), or demonstrate resistance to infection Basic Research
Delivering Therapeutics to Residual Active HIV Reservoirs Supports the development of innovative strategies for improved delivery of antiretroviral drugs and other anti-HIV agents to specific cell types or tissue compartments that serve as persistent HIV-producing reservoirs Basic Research

Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Grants that provide incentive for biotechnology industry studies of targeted therapies and drug delivery systems. Treatment
HIV Vaccine Research and Design (HIVRAD) Grant program designed to advance concepts toward the development of a prophylactic AIDS vaccine. Vaccine
Integrated Preclinical/Clinical AIDS Vaccine Development Program (IPCAVD) Cooperative agreement program that supports HIV/AIDS vaccine concept refinement and testing, culminating in human clinical trials. Vaccine

Innovation in HIV Discovery

Supports projects that design and develop effective immunogens that may provide long-term protection from acquisition of HIV Vaccine
Integrated Preclinical Clinical Program for HIV Topical Microbicides Program designed to support preclinical discovery and development leading up to exploratory Phase I clinical trials aimed at advancing a candidate microbicide or strategy to more advanced clinical trials. Prevention, Microbicide
Non-human Primate (NHP) Core Functional Genomics A contract mechanism to ensure standardization and comparability of functional genomics services and assays conducted for these SVEU and DAIDS-supported preclinical NHP studies Vaccine
Functional Glycomics in HIV Vaccine Design Program designed to stimulate and foster multi-disciplinary investigator- initiated collaborative research that 1) investigates structural and conformational features of glycosylation that may lead to novel HIV vaccine design approaches and 2) elucidates the impact of differential glycosylation on the quality of the immune response to HIV Vaccine
HIV Vaccine Research and Design (HIVRAD) Program designed to advance concepts further towards the development of a preventive AIDS vaccine. Vaccine
