Clinical Studies in Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases

Our clinical studies are aimed to better understand the causes, complications, and disease course of primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDDs) and investigate new therapies and preventions.

Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases

• Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (ALPS) Unit
  Understand ALPS, find the cause, develop new ways to treat it, and, ultimately, find a cure
• Immunopathogenesis Section
  Examine immune cell defects in chronic granulomatous disease, hyper-immunoglobulin E (Job’s) syndrome, and leukocyte adhesion deficiency
• STAT3base
  Maintain a database of gene mutations that cause human hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome

Laboratory of Host Defenses

• Clinical Immunology Unit
  Study antibody defects, common variable immune deficiency, and defects in skin, hair, nails, and teeth associated with PIDDs
• Clinical Pathophysiology Section
  Study defects in a specific immune cell (called a phagocyte) in PIDDs
• Genetic Immunotherapy Section
  Determine if gene therapy can successfully treat chronic granulomatous disease, X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency, and leukocyte adhesion deficiency
• Human Immunological Diseases Unit
  Understand the molecules of the human immune system and how defects in these molecules can cause disease

NIAID PID Clinic

• Provide thorough examination, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations for individuals and families affected by PIDDs
• Offer eligible individuals the opportunity to participate in an ongoing clinical trial at NIAID or outside NIAID
