Labs at NIAID Conducting Research

There are five NIAID labs studying primary immune deficiency diseases:

  1. Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases (LCID) investigators study inborn immune defects leading to increased susceptibility to infection.
  2. Laboratory of Host Defenses (LHD) investigators study immune functions needed to fight infection and the genetic basis for PIDDs.
  3. Laboratory of Immunology investigators study defects related to immune cell growth.
  4. Laboratory of Allergic Diseases investigators study defects related to allergic and immunodeficiency diseases.
  5. Laboratory of Molecular Immunology investigators study defects related to G protein-coupled chemoattractant receptors, including WHIM syndrome.

More information on the diseases studied by NIAID investigators can be found at Major PIDDs Studied by NIAID.

LCID and LHD clinicians also oversee the NIAID Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) Clinic, which serves the following purposes:

  • Provides thorough exams, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations for PIDD patients and their families
  • Offers eligible individuals the opportunity to participate in an ongoing PIDD clinical study

More information can be found at PID Clinic.
