The best way to prevent any tickborne illness is to avoid tick bites. This can be more complicated with soft-bodied ticks that feed quickly and at night. Because soft-bodied ticks are associated with rodents and their nests, avoid or remove rodent infestations, if possible. Tick encounters also can be limited by using insect repellent containing DEET.
