The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. For more than 60 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world. NIAID is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Since 1984, Dr. Fauci has been the director of NIAID, where he oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria, and illness from potential agents of bioterrorism. NIAID also supports research on transplantation and immune-related illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, asthma, and allergies. Read more about Dr. Fauci.

NIAID Accomplishments

NIAID laboratories and NIAID-funded researchers at domestic and international institutions have made many notable scientific advances. Some advances brought us closer to much-needed vaccines and treatments for Ebola, HIV, and influenza. Others expanded our knowledge of rare conditions such as prion diseases and immune deficiency disorders. All are representative of how public investment in biomedical research can advance science and benefit human health. See examples and learn about the stories behind NIAID's most notable accomplishments.
