Job Announcement Description:
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to be the Director of the Therapeutics Research Program (TRP) within the Division of AIDS (DAIDS). DAIDS was formed in 1986 to develop and implement the national research agenda to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Toward that end, the division supports a global research portfolio to advance biological knowledge of HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate goal of creating an AIDS-free generation. To accomplish this, DAIDS develops and supports the infrastructure and biomedical research needed to: 1) reduce HIV incidence through the development of an effective vaccine and biomedical prevention strategies that are safe and desirable; 2) develop novel approaches for the treatment and cure of HIV infection; 3) treat and/or prevent HIV co-infections and co-morbidities of greatest significance; and 4) partner with scientific and community stakeholders to implement effective interventions efficiently.
Within the division, the TRP director oversees a staff of more than 40 employees and a portfolio—in excess of $200 million—of preclinical and clinical research grants, contracts, and clinical trials for the treatment and/or cure of HIV/AIDS, its co-infections (e.g. TB) and co-morbidities in adults. The TRP director: 1) formulates an overall scientific agenda; 2) recommends resource allocation across competing initiatives; and 3) continually assesses and reorients program priorities and activities, both anticipating and responding to changing research needs or redefined policies. The TRP director also serves as a key scientific advisor to the DAIDS and NIAID directors and is responsible for ensuring that the therapeutics research supported by DAIDS is integrated and complementary with internal and external partners.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess a medical or equivalent degree and must demonstrate experience in: 1) working both independently and collaboratively in planning, organizing, and conducting HIV/AIDS therapeutics clinical research; 2) serving effectively in research program administration; and 3) effective communications and collaborations. This experience may be demonstrated by senior-level research experiences as a principal investigator or through active involvement in initiating research projects, developing protocols, conducting clinical studies, documenting findings, interpreting results in a published report (journal), supervising staff, and managing budgets. Competitive candidates will be widely respected by their peers for their scientific and managerial or executive accomplishments and expertise. An active medical license and board certification is preferable.
APPLICATION PROCESS: Provide your curriculum vitae, bibliography, and a three-page statement explaining 1) your vision for HIV therapeutics research, 2) your reasons for being interested in the position, and 3) the specific leadership skills and experience you would bring to the HIV/AIDS research programs at NIAID. In addition, up to three letters of professional reference may be required at a later date as the recruitment process progresses. Submit your application package by email to Bob Gulakowski at email@example.com. The deadline for receipt of applications is October 17, 2017. Direct any inquiries to Mr. Gulakowski by email or call 301-435-5022.
All information provided by applicants will remain confidential and will be reviewed only by authorized NIAID officials. The successful candidate will be appointed under the Title 42(f) authority at a salary commensurate with their experience but not exceeding $212,000. A full package of benefits is also available, including retirement; health, life, and long-term care insurance; annual and sick leave; and a thrift savings plan (401K equivalent).
HHS, NIH, and NIAID are equal opportunity employers.
