Dr. Robert W. Eisinger began his NIH career in 1989 as the Program Virologist in the Division of AIDS Treatment Research program. He subsequently moved to the NIH Office of AIDS Research serving in several key leadership roles for over 25 years, including 8 years as the Director of Scientific and Program Operations and most recently as the Acting OAR Director and Acting NIH Associate Director for AIDS Research in 2015 -2016.  In 2016, he rejoined the NIAID/OD as Special Assistant for Scientific Projects where he coordinated and led several priority initiatives.  In 2014, he was the Director of the Office of Research and Science in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator (PEPFAR) in the Department of State managing three large HIV implementation science programs.  In 2022, Dr. Eisinger was asked by the then Acting NIH Director to serve as the Acting NIH Deputy Director for Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives and Acting Director of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives supervising 14 DPCPSI Offices with a total budget of $2.2billion dollars and 450 staff members. Serving as a Senior Advisor in the NIH Immediate Office of the Director, he has managed and led several priority initiatives for the NIH Director and Principal Deputy Director. Dr. Eisinger rejoined NIAID as a Senior Advisor in May 2024, a role he continues to serve, including co-leading the NIAID RECOVER-Treating Long COVID clinical trials initiative.

During his career, Dr. Eisinger has worked in the medical diagnostic industry successfully bringing several proprietary immunoassays from the feasibility stage through clinical trials and FDA approval.  Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Staff Fellow in the FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Review.
