Dr. Sally Hunsberger is the Acting Director of the Office of Biostatistics Research (OBR), at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Prior to joining NIAID in 2014, Sally had a distinguished tenure as a Mathematical Statistician at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) developing evidence-based statistical approaches for the design and analysis of complex clinical trials.

Most recently, she served as Deputy Director of the Biostatistics Research Branch (BRB), OBR, where she spearheaded several collaborative multi-site infectious disease studies providing scientific expertise and leadership crucial to the program’s success. Dr. Hunsberger has served as an Executive Secretary to numerous Data Safety Monitoring Boards (DSMBs) and has leveraged her experience and knowledge to initiate a cross- Institutional DSMB to ensure harmonized study oversight and safety review. She has authored and co-authored numerous scientific research papers and is the recipient of several NIH Director’s awards and is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

With a Ph.D. from the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Hunsberger has an interest in the design of scientifically robust clinical trials, utilizing novel statistical methodologies and in advancing statistical modeling in the field of biomedical research.
