Veronique Nussenblatt, M.D, Sc.M., M.H.S
Dr. Nussenblatt serves as Acting NIAID Clinical Director and is an infectious diseases physician with expertise in the management of infections in immunocompromised populations. In this role, she leads the Institute’s intramural clinical research program, overseeing the design, conduct, and oversight of clinical protocols conducted at the NIH Clinical Center. She works closely with investigators and multidisciplinary teams to ensure the safe, ethical, and compliant execution of clinical studies, facilitates cross-disciplinary and cross-institute collaborations, and advances the translation of scientific discoveries into improved patient care.
Dr. Nussenblatt provides diagnostic and therapeutic expertise for patients with complex infections who are enrolled in clinical research protocols. Her clinical and research interests focus on infections in immunocompromised hosts and emerging infectious diseases. Dr. Nussenblatt serves as Chief of the Infectious Disease Consult Service at the NIH Clinical Center, where she oversees the evaluation and management of patients with complex infectious diseases. She previously served as Associate Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. She remains actively engaged in training and mentorship, supervising infectious diseases fellows, residents, and medical students. Dr. Nussenblatt co-chaired the PALM007 study, an RCT of tecovirimat for monkeypox disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and continues to lead research on monkeypox.
Dr. Nussenblatt received her M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also earned master’s degrees in Epidemiology and Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Nussenblatt joined the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine following her training. She subsequently spent two years in Belgium advancing the development and conduct of clinical studies within European clinical trial networks.
