NIH’s fiscal year 2020 appropriation totaled $41.6 billion. Of that total, NIH spent $30.8 billion to award 56,169 new and renewed extramural grants to 2,650 U.S. and international organizations.

Opportunities and Resources

The opportunity seeks dynamic, multidisciplinary consortia of structural biologists, virologists, and computational scientists to resolve complex biological structures relevant to HIV prevention, treatment, and cure.

Identify mechanisms behind heterogenous seasonal influenza infection responses by developing and applying computational tools; specifically, tools that can integrate molecular, genetic, cellular, patient, or population-level data.

NIAID’s Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation and Office of Cyber Infrastructure and Computational Biology launched the Vaccine Adjuvant Compendium to foster collaborations between NIAID-supported adjuvant researchers and the broader scientific community.

Early-stage investigators can find support for exploratory, applied, proof-of-principle, or high-risk, high-impact research projects to discover safe and effective therapeutics to mitigate toxicities resulting from exposures to highly toxic chemicals.

Applicants submitting AIDS-related research applications for a funding opportunity on using nonhuman primate models in basic science or translational research have new receipt dates to follow.

NIAID may provide funded extensions to current fellowship (F) and career development (K) award recipients who have experienced significant hardship and are in the final year of their award’s period of performance.

If you are planning an application due on or after January 25, 2022, take note that all senior/key personnel must have an eRA Commons ID. While all senior/key personnel have been encouraged to obtain eRA Commons IDs, it has not yet been required.

To reflect new evidence and emerging scientific knowledge gaps during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, NIAID updated the NIAID Strategic Plan for COVID-19 Research to inform investigators and the public on key scientific areas of interest.

Participants will learn how to develop successful Phase I and II proposals as well as Phase II Commercialization Plans. Speakers will also discuss how to smoothly manage the award process and post-award expectations.

NIAID’s chartered scientific review committees evaluate applications for institutional and educational training, and career development awards.
