Concepts represent early planning stages for program announcements, requests for applications, or solicitations for Council’s input. If NIAID publishes an initiative from one of these concepts, we link to it below. To find NIAID initiatives, go to Explore NIH Grant Opportunities.
Note: Council approval does not guarantee that a concept will become an initiative.

Objective: Although clinical research infrastructure is crucial to furthering the Institute’s research, NIAID recognizes that additional models of clinical research may be important to advancing its research mission; therefore, NIAID has established the investigator-initiated clinical trial program for clinical trials that cannot or will not be conducted through existing NIAID-supported clinical trial infrastructure.
Description: This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) will support the NIAID Clinical Trial Implementation (U01) Cooperative Agreement. This NOFO focuses on the implementation of investigator-initiated, milestone driven, high-risk clinical trials, and as applicable, mechanistic studies. Mechanistic work in clinical trials may be of great value because it promotes the understanding of human diseases and the development of future therapeutic modalities. Support is available for clinical trials up to 5 years, as well as for extended clinical trials of 6- or 7-years.

Objective: This notice of funding opportunity, issued by NIAID, requests submission of investigator-initiated Resource-Related Research Projects (R24) applications. The proposed resource must provide a significant benefit to currently funded high-priority projects in need of further coordination and support in the areas specified. Under rare circumstances, this mechanism may be used to support development of a new resource to the broader scientific community of NIAID. It is anticipated that the request for resource support through the R24 activity code will occur on an infrequent basis and only in circumstances where other mechanisms of support from NIAID are not appropriate.
Description: The proposed resources should be relevant to the scientific areas of the NIAID mission including the biology, pathogenesis, and host response to microbes, including HIV; the mechanisms of normal immune function and immune dysfunction resulting in autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, allergy, asthma, and transplant rejection; and translational research to develop vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics to prevent and treat infectious, immune-mediated, and allergic diseases.

Objective: This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO), issued by NIAID, invites submission of investigator-initiated Program Project (P01) applications. The proposed programs may address scientific areas relevant to the NIAID mission including the biology, pathogenesis, and host response to microbes, including HIV; the mechanisms of normal immune function and immune dysfunction resulting in autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, allergy, asthma, and transplant rejection; and translational research to develop vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics to prevent and treat infectious, immune-mediated, and allergic diseases.
Description: Each P01 application submitted in response to this NOFO must include at least two related research projects that share a common central theme, focus, and/or overall objective.
