Although great progress has been made in developing effective HIV prevention tools and treatments since the virus was first identified as the cause of AIDS more than three decades ago, the pandemic continues. Nearly 37 million people are living with HIV around the world, according to UNAIDS. NIAID-supported studies address all areas of HIV research, including developing and testing preventive HIV vaccines, novel prevention strategies, and new treatments for HIV and AIDS-related diseases.
