Biography
Dr. Reda Rawi serves as a Staff Scientist in the Structural Bioinformatics Core. He obtained his Diploma in Mathematics from the Applied University of Koblenz, Germany, in 2007, followed by an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from Birkbeck College, University of London, UK, in 2008. He completed his Ph.D. in Computational Biology at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, in 2013, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Daniel Hoffmann. After earning his doctorate, Dr. Rawi took on a postdoctoral role at the Qatar Computing Research Institute in Doha, Qatar, where he spent 2.5 years developing and implementing innovative machine learning tools for projects in structural biology. In 2016, he received a NIH postdoctoral fellowship and joined the Structural Bioinformatics Core at the VRC. At the VRC, Dr. Rawi led various initiatives in vaccine design and antibody enhancement, focusing on a wide range of pathogens, including HIV-1, Influenza, and Malaria. He significantly advanced the application of machine learning within the VRC, leveraging his expertise to address critical scientific challenges.
