If your NIH research award supports vertebrate animal research, your institution must send an annual report to NIH’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) by December 1, 2021.

Check what to include in your report and find a sample template at Annual Report to OLAW.

Traditionally, these annual reports covered calendar years—January 1 to December 31. However, the reports transitioned in 2020 to covering fiscal years. Your next annual vertebrate animal report should cover the 2021 fiscal year—October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021—and your institutional official must send the signed report as a PDF over email to olawarp@mail.nih.gov by December 1, 2021.

Get a summary of other animal-related reporting requirements in the Know Your Reporting Requirements section of NIAID’s Research Using Vertebrate Animals guide.
