You don’t itemize facilities and administrative (F&A) costs when applying for a research project grant. The amount is calculated by applying your organization’s negotiated F&A rate to the project’s direct cost base.

Thus, although you’ll rarely encounter a cap on F&A costs in a research project grant application, you are not permitted to request and justify a preferred amount.

Other award types, like career development awards or fellowship awards, may apply an alternative F&A rate of 8 percent or exclude F&A costs entirely.
