The COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying mitigation measures have adversely affected the scientific progress and career trajectory of early-career scientists.
In response to these unexpected disruptions, NIAID may provide funded extensions to current fellowship (F) and career development (K) award recipients who have experienced significant hardship and are in the final year of their award’s period of performance, pending availability of funds. The supplements will provide stipend support and prorated institutional allowances or salary support, respectively, but not additional resources or research expenses.
The deadline to apply is June 7, 2021.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants for the NIAID-Funded Extensions for Fellowship Award Recipients Whose Career Trajectories Have Been Significantly Impacted by COVID-19 must be a currently funded NIAID F30, F31, F32 recipient in the final year of their award and have experienced a minimum of a 12-week lab closure or clinical research interruption due to COVID-19.
Eligible applicants for the NIAID-Funded Extensions for Career Award Recipients Whose Career Trajectories Have Been Significantly Impacted by COVID-19 must be a currently funded NIAID K01, K08, K22, K23, K25, K99 recipient in the final year of their award or in a first no-cost extension (NCE) and have experienced a minimum of a 12-week lab closure or clinical research interruption due to COVID-19 (K99 recipients in an NCE should contact the assigned grants specialist in advance of submitting an extension request due to additional administrative requirements).
Applicants meeting the eligibility requirements of either notice may be eligible for a four-month funded extension. In addition, applicants may be eligible for an additional two-month funded extension, under certain circumstances, for a total combined six-month funded extension. Funded extensions for F and K awardees are for stipend support and a prorated institutional allowance only.
F and K award recipients who have successfully competed as a principal investigator for a research project grant with at least $100,000 annual direct costs are not eligible for this funded extension.
