Several months ago, we asked you to Help Spread the Word of a New NIH Fellowship Program. That initiative, the NIH Medical Scientist Partnership Program (MSPP), will support during their mentored dissertation research and clinical training highly promising predoctoral students who are matriculated in either a combined MD/PhD or other combined-doctoral degree training (e.g., DDS/PhD, DVM/PhD), or a clinical doctoral program with the option to pursue a PhD during clinical degree training.
MSPP scholars will complete their clinical degree training at their desired clinical degree school and conduct the PhD portion of their training in research laboratories in the NIH Intramural Research Program. Each MSPP award will provide up to 4 years of support during the extramural clinical degree training. NIH intramural funding will support each scholar while they are engaged in their doctoral research at NIH.
As detailed in Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for NIH Medical Scientist Partnership Program (FM1, Clinical Trial Not Allowed), NIAID estimates the following:
- Publication Date of Funding Opportunity Announcement: February 3, 2023
- First Application Due Date: August 8, 2023
- First Award and Start Date: April 1, 2024
The candidates we aim to support through MSPP are unlikely to be familiar with NIH and its extramural funding procedures. Thus, we encourage senior investigators, mentors, and institutional officials to become familiar with the program as to better guide any applicants under their charge.
If you have any questions, email NIHMSPPQuestions@niaid.nih.gov and NIAID staff will respond.
