“I received an R56-Bridge award. What type should my next R01 application be?”

If you received the R56-Bridge award after submitting a new (A0) application, we recommend you take advantage of being allowed to submit a resubmission (A1) for your next application. Alternatively, if you received an R56-Bridge award following a resubmission application, then your next R01 application must be an A0 application. Put differently, your decision-making of A0 or A1 is not altered by having an R56-Bridge award.

Note, however, that your next R01 application following the R56-Bridge award cannot be a renewal (Type 2) application.

Regardless of type, you should use data gathered and progress made with support from the R56-Bridge award to bolster your next R01 application. You should also make updates based on reviewer concerns listed in the previous application’s summary statement.
