If your NIH research award supports vertebrate animal research, your institution must send an annual report to NIH’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) by December 1, 2022. A single report should cover all the institution’s program evaluations and facility inspections.

Learn what’s included in the report and find a sample template at Annual Report to OLAW.

The annual vertebrate animal report should cover the 2022 fiscal year—October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2022—and your institutional official must send the signed report as a PDF by email to olawarp@mail.nih.gov by December 1, 2022. (Before 2020, these annual reports covered calendar years—January 1 to December 31. But, again, the reports now cover fiscal years.)

Get a summary of other animal-related reporting requirements in the Know Your Reporting Requirements section of NIAID’s Research Using Vertebrate Animals guide.

Direct your questions to OLAW’s Division of Assurances at 301-496-7163 or olawdoa@mail.nih.gov.
