NIH’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Suggests Flexibilities
Each Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) must review at least once every 6 months the assured institution’s program for humane care and use of animals. Each IACUC must also review the care and treatment of animals in all animal study areas and facilities at least semiannually to evaluate compliance with applicable guidelines.
To help ease administrative burden upon IACUCs completing these required reviews, NIH’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare published Guidance on Flexibilities for Conducting Semiannual Program Review and Guidance on Flexibilities for Conducting Semiannual Inspections of Animal Facilities. Both notices suggest permissible approaches for IACUCs to complete reviews more efficiently, e.g., “the timing of facility inspections can include flexibility of within 30 calendar days of the 6-month interval from the last inspection, provided there is no forward drift of the date from year to year."
