In response to the outbreak of the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, the Ministry of Health of Mexico identified the need to create a clinical research network with the mission to lead and promote discoveries and advances in the field of emerging infectious disease. The resulting network, the Mexican Emerging Infectious Disease Clinical Research Network (La Red), was established in September 2009. Ten institutions have joined in this partnership, working collaboratively to share resources that enhance the conduct of research ranging from natural history studies to highly regulated multi-site clinical trials.
The LaRed Network has conducted over 9 multi-center studies and enrolled over 7,800 subjects. Several sites are currently conducting studies in Influenza, Serious Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI), and the ZIKA virus.
