Longitudinal Observations of Vaccine Responses to SARS-CoV-2 and other Emerging Infectious Diseases (COVAC)

We are seeking participants who are scheduled to receive a new vaccine or a booster vaccine against SARS-COV-2 or another emerging infection. The NIH does not provide the vaccine.

What Does the Study Involve?

The purpose of this this study is to learn more about the immune system and how it responds to vaccines that have been developed to help protect people against emerging infections, like SARS-COV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).  We will collect health information and blood will be drawn for research tests.  The blood will be used to study how the immune system responds to the vaccine. In addition, the cells in the blood may be screened for genes that have missing pieces or changes in them that can affect their function.

Subjects will be asked to come to the NIH as an outpatient for up to 9 visits.

Who Can Participate?

We are seeking participants 18 years of age and older.  Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not eligible.

Where Is It Taking Place?

The study takes place at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.  Participants must be able to travel to the NIH.

Is There a Cost?

There is no cost to participate.

Is Compensation Provided?

Participants will be compensated.

Participating in Research

Watch a series of short informational videos about participating in clinical trials. These videos are intended to help potential participants understand how research works, what questions they should consider asking, and things to think about when deciding whether or not to participate in a study.
