Microbial, Immune, and Metabolic Perturbations by Antibiotics (MIME Study)

Join the microbiome healthy volunteer clinical trial if you are age 18-49, have no chronic medical problems, and have no known allergies to Amoxicillin or Azithromycin

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seek healthy volunteers for a study looking at how common antibiotics affect the trillions of good microbes that live on and in our body, also known as our microbiome.

What Does the Study Involve?

During this study, participants may:

• Be asked to take the antibiotic Amoxicillin or Azithromycin or act as a control (no antibiotic)
• Have up to 11 outpatient visits over a one-year time period
• Choose to be part of a sub study that includes three overnight stays in an environmentally controlled room that measures the body’s energy use at the NIH Clinical Center

Who Can Participate?

You may be eligible if you:

• Are 18-49 years old
• Have no chronic medical problems
• Have no known allergies to Amoxicillin or Azithromycin
• Are willing to allow storage of their biological samples
• Are able to comply with study procedures and swallow capsules

The NIH Clinical Center, America’s Research Hospital, located in Bethesda, MD.

Is There a Cost?

No.

Is Compensation Provided?

Yes. If participants complete all 11 outpatient study visits, they may be compensated up to $1,270. If participants elect to participate in the optional metabolic chamber portion of the study, total compensation is $2,860. These values do not include the amounts paid for unscheduled visits.
