June 2023 Trans-Divisional Council-Approved Concepts

Concepts represent early planning stages for program announcements, requests for applications, notices of special interest, or solicitations for Council's input. If NIAID publishes an initiative from one of these concepts, we link to it below. To find initiatives, go to Opportunities & Announcements.

Note: Council approval does not guarantee that a concept will become an initiative.

Objective: The overall goal of the Primary Caregiver Technical Assistance Supplements (PCTAS) program is to help an eligible postdoctoral scientist maintain high productivity in an NIAID-funded laboratory while engaging in primary care-giving responsibilities for a child or ailing relative. In order to accomplish this goal, the PCTAS program is designed to hire a technician to work with the postdoctoral scientist on their project and have the ability to devote full-time effort while maintaining productivity.

Description: NIAID recognizes that postdoctoral scientists with young children or ailing relatives are sometimes unable to focus completely on their research activities because of primary caregiver responsibilities. As a result, these circumstances may delay an individual’s transition to an independent career or reduce their scientific productivity at critical periods. Principal investigators may request additional funds to hire a mid- to senior-level technician to fill in when the postdoctoral scientist is required to be away from the lab to fulfill their caregiver responsibilities.
