Fellowship Opportunities at NIAID

NIAID Emerging Leaders in Data Science Fellowship Program

This fellowship program addresses a critical need at NIAID for expertise in data science and ability to apply those skills to the NIAID mission. The program aims to establish a cadre of talented data scientists (i.e., expertise in biomedical informatics, computational biology, epidemiology, computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, or related fields) with a keen interest in applying their knowledge and skills to advance NIAID’s research mission. The fellowship program is open to recent advanced degree graduates. Applications are currently open and eligible candidates are encouraged to apply at Zintellect.com. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis throughout 2026. Start dates will vary based on application timelines but may be as early as late summer/early fall 2026.

AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships

A yearlong fellowship program providing the opportunity to learn first-hand about policymaking while contributing knowledge and analytical skills to the federal policymaking process. Those with a doctoral-level science degree or a master’s in engineering are eligible to apply. Applications are due on November 1.

ODSET previously hosted Noffisat Oki, Ph.D. as an AAAS Fellow. ODSET is not hosting any AAAS Fellows at the moment.

Coding it Forward – Civic Digital Fellowship

A 10-week internship empowering early-career technologists to explore careers in public service. Applicants must be a current or recent undergraduate or graduate student. Applications are due each year in January.

In the fall of 2020, ODSET hosted Hoyin Chu as a Civic Digital Fellow and, in summer of 2021, hosted both Anuva Banwasi and Snipta Mallick. There are currently no Civic Digital Fellows within the office.

DATA Scholar Program

A one- to two-year position in which Scholars work within an NIH institute, center, or office to optimize and accelerate data science in biomedicine to improve human health and well-being. Read about the current DATA Scholar, Dr. Sepideh Mazrouee, and her project in her ODSET biography.

NIH Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award (Postbac IRTA/CRTA)

A program providing recent college graduates who are planning to apply to graduate or professional school an opportunity to spend one or two years performing full-time research at the NIH. Applications are allowed on a rolling basis depending on desired start date.

AIM-AHEAD Training Programs

The AIM-AHEAD Consortium aims to create mutually beneficial and coordinated partnerships to empower researchers and communities across the United States in the development of AI/ML models and enhance the capabilities of this emerging technology.
